The fashion must go on....

I'm sure many of you like me, are heartbroken over the recent Steelers loss. Now that the heartache has subsided, I've decided to start my fashion planning for next season!

I have been rocking the same Athletichic outfit for the past few season, and I think the 2012 season is time for a change!

I have to admit I am tempted to wait and see the Nike uniforms debuting this season before I make any decisions, but this adorable reversible jersey from Charm 4 Luck may be too cute to pass up!

Two jerseys in one + plus shimmer = love!!

Baron Davis Saving Menswear as We Know It!?

So I realize this somewhat old news, but please forgive me as I am not really an NBA fan, however, there was no way I could let this go by without covering it on my blog.

My favorite NBA player, Baron Davis (based solely on his style), was very busy during the lockout. Doing what you ask?

Mr. Davis was working on putting together a documentary about the decline of style in menswear, a subject near and dear to my heart.

The Wall Street Journal talked to him about it (via SLAM).
The documentary, “American Schlub,” is in pre-production. It takes aim at the poor sartorial standards of the American male, says Mr. Davis, who plays for the Cleveland Cavaliers. “We used to be fashion forward,” he laments. Now, “We’re more of a sweats and Ugg boots type of society,” he says. “We wanted to challenge men, from that perspective.”

I was delighted to hear he shares my feelings on Uggs! My hope is that his documentary will be successful like his others, and that men will listen, considering most take sports to heart and worship many of these athletes.

I plan on keep tabs on the production of this film, and will update you, because I personally can't wait!

Suzanne Johnson Helps With NFL Women’s Apparel Revamp

As I mentioned back in October, Suzanne Johnson is becoming my favorite NFL wife!

In November she helped host the first women’s wear pop-up event before the Jets and Patriots squared off at MetLife Stadium.

With the help of the NFL, Johnson created a pregame Miami-nightclub-inspired shopping experience, which was replete with dangling black and white crystal chandeliers, loud dance music and cocktails.

Can someone put me in touch with Mrs. Tomlin??? :)

So my intention has never been to make this a daily outfit blog....but! I wanted to share this outfit I wore to the Pitt game last night. :) Please ignore my overall appearance, this shot was not planned as you can tell!

It was comfortable and Athletichic at the same time! It's amazing how just layering can take a sporty outfit to a fashionable one!

It was a vintage Pitt sweatshirt that I cut the sleeves off of, and a gold knit short sleeve cardi on top. I took the self belt from the cardi and put it in my hair. :)

Showing up at New York Fashion Week in a Swarovski-detailed Jets jerseys? I couldn't believe my eyes when I read it, but that is exactly what Suzanne Johnson, the wife of Jets owner Woody Johnson did! A women after my own heart. Fashion Week, Football and Sparkles!

Suzanne was taking the opportunity to show off items from the latest NFL Women's collection. Although the collection has been around for years, this is the 2nd year of the fashion push from the NFL. And personally I couldn't be happier. Perhaps they've stumbled across my blog?

This year's ad campaign is centered around rivalries in the NFL, featuring wives, and daughters of some of the NFL's most well known coaches and owners. This idea is continued on to a lookbook on their site. Each week a new fashion is featured for the biggest rivalry game of the week.

What I like most about this is that I have been pretty impressed with the quality of the items from these collections. As I've mentioned in past posts I find it very frustrating that so many people slap an NFL team logo on a low quality item and charge so much $ for it. As an employee of the fashion industry I typically have higher standards for the things I buy, but to me this is a no brainer, we deserve good quality items to properly cheer on our teams!

I asked him to do a little write up on an idea he shared with me...enjoy!

New York’s Athletes Invade Fashion Week

Actresses, fashionistas and stylists are those you’d expect to see in the tents during
New York’s Fashion Week but they now have some company. While New York has
always had its fashionable athletes; the always-suited New York Yankees of the 40’s
and 50’s, Walt “Clyde” Frazier and the New York “Sasson” Rangers, more and more
athletes are joining the wave.

The most obvious case may be former Vogue intern and New York Ranger Sean
Avery, who has never met a fashion designer he didn’t like since his days in Los
Angeles and even more so in New York but he has company.

The always-dapper Amar’e Stoudemire of the New York Knicks, as well as his
teammate, Carmelo Anthony have been in the tents so often this week, they are now
on a first name basis with some of the biggest in the industry including Richard Chai
and Simon Spurr.

Mr. Kim Kardashian, Kris Humphries of the New Jersey (soon to be Brooklyn) Nets
took part in a Fashion Night Out event at Saks 5th Avenue as well as been a staple in
the front row this past week as the NBA is still locked out.

New York’s newest athlete Brad Richards has been taking it all in for the first time.
The New York Rangers center has rubbed elbows with the likes of Ed Westwick and
James Marsden while in the front row at Tommy Hilfiger after being seen enjoying
his first Fashion Week at Hugo Boss and John Varvatos Fashion Night Out parties to
start the week.

Some of Richards teammates have joined him out and about this week including
Brian Boyle, Brandon Dubinsky and Brandon Prust.

Not to be outdone by his teammates, possibly the best dressed out of the crew,
Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist hosted his own Fashion Night Out event at
Prada before taking his 13th Fashion Week, just two more than shutouts he had last
season.

New Steelers collections

So I hope you've all checked out the new Steelers items in the PINK Victoria's Secret collection....my personal fave this cute slouchy tee...

A little less publicized, but slightly more affordable is the new NFL items from Old Navy. As soon as I heard about it I decided to purchase this vintage inspired tee..

It is very soft and comfy. My only tiny problem with it, is the cap sleeves. I am never a fan of this sleeve length. But for the price I would definitely give some of the other pieces a shot!

This time next week I will be in the land of 10,000 lakes! My cousins plan on taking me around to see all of the sites, I can't wait.

I know my cousin C.S. plans on taking me to see some of Minnesota's finest casinos. So needless to say I have been practicing in a casino online. I've been brushing up on my blackjack skills (my fave game).

Now I would be lying if I didn't admit I absolutely adore seeing all of the prospects dressed up in their suits at the draft!

It was hard to choose, but the winner of the night in my opinion was the Saint's Cameron Jordan. I love the color combo and the sheen of his suit. And it fit his giant body perfectly! Well done Mr. Jordan, well done!

Floral, Floral, floral patterns are always hot in spring, but stripes, on the other hand, I

noticed the new season can’t get enough of. Who knew stripes could be so versatile and so

diagonally. If you don’t want striped clothing, try a striped handbag or shoes to give your

old little black dress some pizzazz and get you in line.

My friend shared this article with me about the Americanization of the Rue St.-Honoré.

Although I find this news exciting it also worries me because as pointed out in the article this also comes with the “casualization of fashion,” if the French start to look to us for trends and ways to dress, who will we look to?

I remind myself that this may be far off though because they still get a kick out of cowboys and Indians, a trend we have been over for years!

I suppose it is also important to keep in mind their style is totally different, their preppiness is actually considered BCBG, bon chic, bon genre. So at the end of the day their chicness shines through no matter what.

As we all sit and wait for news about the additions to our team in 2011 we must keep in mind the draft is well over a month away!

So in the meantime let's go a step further and discuss 2012 fabric trends for menswear. 2012 should be an exciting year with the launch of the NFL uniforms made by Nike and the continuation of causal luxury fabrics.

"Casual luxury continues to be the driving trend in men’s wear fabrics for spring-summer 2012, seen in an array of noble qualities with a relaxed, sporty feel. Brooks Brothers

My style has never been anything close to what people consider preppy, or classic for that matter, so it has always surprised me that I enjoy Brooks Brothers clothing so much. Now I'll never purchase anything from them, but I can appreciate them on clients of mine. So you can imagine my excitement when I read of the youthful turn they are taking with their Fall collection.

Now I admit some of the items look a little played out to me, and overdone by every preppy retailer out there, but some of the pieces really stood out!

One thing you will always receive with BB clothing, amazing quality and workmanship! I may need to make my first purchase from them this fall?!

Hockey players! A friend of mine shared this post from The Stylistocrat. They like me were impressed by the way the Penguins and Crapitals (that's not a typo) dressed during the Winter Classic. Well they found out that during the collective bargaining agreement in 2005 a dress code was written into the players contract.

Tres chic! You know how much I love Astor&Black, well it's not surprise they picked up this story as well.

Last week during my radio interview I made the comment about the Steelers gold really being yellow under the Pantone color system. It wasn't until afterward when my friend asked me what Pantone was that I realized it is not a common company for people outside of the fashion industry.

Talk of the Pantone color system has been in my vocabulary since the first week of fashion school and something I've always enjoyed talking about and staying on top of.

So you can imagine my excitement when a friend of mine told me about the NPR story covering Pantone!

Superbowl Heartache....

In this article from October 13th 2010, I know that was awhile ago, but I save articles like this for moments such as these. :) Anyway back to the trend, denim was everywhere, extending past just jeans to chic dresses and even suits (pictured above).

Forbes.com recently listed out their Best-Dressed Athletes in the world. A lot of the choices were not a surprise to me, Tom Brady, David Beckham, Lebron James etc.

The article did open my eyes to a few athletes that I had no idea dressed so well! Baron Davis (pictured above) for example. The guard for the L.A. Clippers has an eye for vintage clothing and accessories. Refusing to use the same stylist as the rest of the team, he really stands out! I would love to see a designer collaboration with some of these guys!

Have you ever invested in a pair of boots you just knew would work wonderfully in your wardrobe for years to come? I think we've all been there, by the 2nd or 3rd season you're sick of looking at them. My friend MM was just complaining to me about this while I was in Chicago, I shared with her a little trick I use and she fell in love. So I decided to share with you! :) Its VERY simple and I bet you already own both items you need!

Take your favorite pair of knee to thigh high socks and turn them inside out before putting them on, next slip on your favorite calf to knee high boot. Fold over your printed socks on top of the boots, and ta da! You've give your 2007 investment a whole new look!

Back in June I shared with you the most Athletichic couple out there, Tom and Gisele. Well it looks as though Tom has found a way to dabble in his wife's career path...

Baltimore based Under-Amour announced that they recently signed a multi-year deal with the New England Patriots quarterback. Brady will now be wearing Under-Amour during training, as well as customized cleats on the filed!

Guest post!!! NFL-Inspired Halloween Costumes

I came across the blog Southern Flair when the darling girl behind it, Leslie did a tailgating outfit! Well I loved her style so much I asked Leslie to do a guest post! Enjoy!

First off, I was so excited when Aire asked me to do a guest post on Athletichic. This is my very first guest post, and since I've only done two "football" posts on my own blog (one on Saints-inspired outfits and the other on LSU tailgating outfits), it took me a while to come up with an athletic-inspired idea.

Then Halloween started to draw nearer, and I always have the best time coming up with different costumes. Sometimes I like to go all out and buy a new costume, but most years, I like using things I already have (dresses, shoes, etc.) and adding a few accessories to make me into whatever or whomever I intend to be.

And being from Louisiana, we are still giddy about winning the Super Bowl last season. Fleur de lis are everywhere and everyone chants "Who Dat" almost daily… seriously.

Because of this, I couldn't help but come up with a Saints-themed Halloween costume. And then the ideas just kept coming… the Cowboys, the Vikings, the Redskins, the Patriots, etc.

So if you're still looking for a Halloween costume, and you're a sports fan, look to your favorite team (not just football, either) for Halloween inspiration. Think of the mascot, team colors, add a few quirky accessories and there's your Halloween costume! You can even do this for your favorite college team too!

Below I've created three outfits to give you some ideas. And yes, I used a cell phone to complete Brett Favre's look.

Steelers Fashion Show

On Friday, October 15th the Steelers held their annual fashion show befitting the Thomas E. Strazl Transplantation Institute at UPMC and the Cancer Caring Center.

The two highlights of the night were definitely Troy hitting the stage for the first time with his son, Paisios. And the Steelers wedding gown. Now, I'm a huge fan, but you will not find me in this dress on my wedding day, as beautiful as it is, I just want a more classic wedding. You wouldn't believe how many people have asked me this. :)

Why the picture of the Oregon Ducks you ask? Well its to get you excited over the possibilities of the new NFL uniforms (Nike provides the uniforms for this fashionable team).

It was announced today that Nike will be taking over as the official uniform provider of the NFL in 2012.

Basically every NFL item you wear will be handled by a different company. You can find more details here.

I don't know about you, but I'm very excited for this change!

As soon as I found out I was going to be featured in Pittsburgh Fashion Magazine, I knew I wanted my good friend Gabe to model for me.

Not only is he a good friend, he is also built like a real model, aka very simple to dress!

Gabe is wearing a pair of Calvin Klein jeans from Marshalls. I love the distressed wash with the vintage looking shirt. You can find lots of options on CK's site.

When it came to Gabe's shirt I knew I didn't want to make it super trendy, I wanted classic, almost vintage Stillers. I love the applique on this t-shirt! And the awesome Steelers logo on the sleeve. It was soft and breathable.

Gabe and I debated on his shoes, I wanted more of a loafer boot, but he really liked these, and I have to say I was happy with the result. You can find them at Dick's.

Now, the greatest part of this outfit, my Steelers belt buckle that I never let out of my sight. :) I purchased this one in Chinatown in NYC years ago, but I found similar ones.

Continuing on with the outfits I styled for my Pittsburgh Fashion Magazine photo shoot...

Next up we have Mrs. DeCicco, mother of my best friend BD, and Pitt football players Dom and Brock.

Mrs. D was super fun to work with because she has such great style already! All of these pieces she already owned, so it was simple putting something together.

Sadly, the items she is wearing are no longer available, but I found substitutes for most of them.

Starting with her t-shirt, I selected this one to replace the short sleeve version she is wearing. The long sleeve shirt will help you transition into fall and winter easily.

Her vest is Ralph by Ralph Lauren and absolutely adorable! Unfortunately she snagged this guy in the spring and it is no longer available, but I found this vest at The Gap. Although it is not metallic, it could still work as a great layering piece.

Her gold metallic stitched jeans are from Cache, luckily they still have a similar version available.

The shoes are from Footloose, you could really do any gold metallic shoe with this outfit, since I know heels are not for everyone, I decided to replace them with these super comfortable TOMS.

And last but not least, those are her bangles, but I think they really completed the outfit. So try these instead.

NFL woos women shoppers

My friend sent me an awesome article from Fox Sports talking about the NFL's $10 million marketing effort to woo female fans to their new and improved site, www.nfl.com/women

Finally the league is paying attention to the fan base that makes up 44% of its fans!

There is talk of creating spa gift bags with natural brown sugar scrub, Mediterranean sea salts and goat's milk and honey lotion with team logos. Those bags come with team-spirited nail polish, such as black and yellow for Pittsburgh Steelers fans, see above.

As much as this is a step in the right direction, I hope they do not just slap the team logo on a crappy product and expect us to purchase it! My wish is for quality products we can be proud to wear and use!

Remember back in July when I told you to submit your Steelers craziness to the "Whatever It Takes: Steelers Fan Collections, Rituals, and Obsessions" exhibit? Well I hope you did because I most likely snapped a picture of it on Friday night.

I had to split my time up Friday night, between Fashion Night Out and THE IMMACULATE RECEPTION. Such an Athletichic night.

First stop was the Miller Gallery @ Carnegie Mellon University to check out the exhibit. I was hesitant to share pictures with you because I don't want you to feel like you don't have to go now. For those reading this that are out of state, this for you. For those of you in PA, Go! Its free and literally breathtaking to see the collection of our fan's devotion. Friday night was an open reception sponsored by Iron City. Iron City and Steelers a match made in heaven.

Pittsburgh Steelers

Pittsburgh's football team shared the same nickname as the city's baseball team, the Pirates, from 1933 to 1940.

Before the 1940 season, owner Art Rooney held a rename-the-team contest. A change couldn't hurt, as Pittsburgh had failed to post a winning season in its first seven years.

Joe Santoni, who worked in a mill for Pittsburgh Steel, was one of several fans who suggested Steelers. Santoni received a pair of season tickets, which he would renew every year until his death in 2003.

People often ask me why I do not discuss actual football games/stats on my blog. I usually just shake my head, no one wants to hear what I have to say. That's what my friends and family are for because they have no choice. :)

I was thinking this summer I would maybe take a different approach with my blog this season, and start to review games. I'm still undecided on that...

However, if I had to write a season preview it would sound a lot like this. I love this article for so many reasons, and I hope you do too. I was sold after the 4th paragraph!

I am usually NOT a fan of popped collars..like at all. But when I saw this picture of Dwayne Wade on Page Six I couldn't stop staring. What a wonderful Saturday afternoon outfit. And what I love most about this look, is how quickly it can go from day to night with the loss of a layer! Well done Mr. Wade, well done!

After living in NYC for years I actually found myself not caring for most of their sports teams because of their fans. It may have been the bandwagon Giants fans, the obnoxious Jets fans, I could go on...

One thing I had to face was how cute the newest QB to set foot in NYC was. Mark Sanchez is adorable, and from stories I have heard, a nice guy too. This is the point where I will bypass comparing him to our QB and continue on with the fashion....

According to the article in today's WWD, there have been rumors circulating about which ad Mark's adorable face will land on. Based on info in the article, I think we may be seeing a Hugo Boss collaboration announced very soon.

So it got me thinking, where would you like to see him end up if you could choose??

After years of dressing players on football fields across the country Under Amour is finally taking their goods to the court. On October 30th they will officially launch their basketball collection.

With the success they have had in recent years its kind of surprising that they did not rush to get a basketball collection in the market! According to the article this collaboration has been years in the making, and they wanted to take their time to perfect it.

Hopefully it will be well worth the wait!

With the return to ladylike styles for women, it only makes sense that the trend would make its way to menswear.

I don't know about you but nothing screams polished, like a nice suit. Enter the WWD article from March 11th 2010 that highlights the popularity of customs suits in the mass market.

With prices ranging from $300-$900, this new crop of custom suit retailers have been going head to head with department stores and their off the rack suits.

My.Suit seems to be doing everything right in this market, sadly the closest store is on Madison Ave. in NYC. Have no fear though, Astor & Black and Indochino are available. Both sites offer custom suits for under $500 that can be delivered in a matter of weeks.

What are you waiting for guys?? Hopefully one day soon we'll all look like cast members from Mad Men.

So like most people Fall is my favorite time of year. The weather is just right, football is starting, fashion weeks around the world are taking place, and the layering of clothes has begun!

I've been waiting to discuss fall trends with you because unlike spring, I can never decide on just a few that I like!

One trend that I've been wanting to talk about since February is Fifties glam. Now I know for a lot of ladies this trend has never really gone out of style. However, for the shoppers who are less inclined to thrift or vintage shop, but love a full dress, this is your season!

Gaining the most press about this trend would have to be Louis Vuitton, and rightfully so. Look at that ad. It is perfection. Also be sure to check out, Callula Lillibelle, Timo Weiland, Gary Graham, and Rachel Antonoff for inspiration and for much more affordable pieces ModCloth always comes through with vintage inspired items!

I was so inspired by the positive feedback I've received on the Athletichic photo shoot yesterday (I'm going to be featured in Pittsburgh Fashion Magazine). That I've decided to run with it! This Raiders outfit is in honor of my model GT. He is a Raiders fan through and through, but he sucked it up and posed in head to toe Steelers gear for me. :)

You may notice the outfit is missing shoes. I'm waiting patiently for someone to come out with cute NFL shoes!!!

I finally got the pics on my computer from the closet styling I did for my friend LB a little bit ago. I ended up only getting to do 11 outfits for her, I really wanted to take my time! But I was able to take 8 items that LB had that she was not sure how to wear or was thinking of getting rid of, and work them into easy, fun outfits!

She told me she truly fell in love with her wardrobe again. Such a compliment.

Creative Director for the US Olympic Team
